What does an Educational Assessment entail?
A typical educational assessment includes a number of steps beginning with an intake session (with the client or their parents/guardians) and the collecting of background information and details from other roleplayers such as teachers, therapists (speech, occupational, psychological) and other medical professionals where relevant.
The assessment itself is conducted with the client on a one-to-one basis under test conditions and usually takes between 3-4 hours. In the case of younger children and those who cannot complete the assessment in one session, two sessions may take place.
After the assessment concludes, the tests are scored, interpreted, and reported upon. Recommendations are made where applicable and a comprehensive feedback session with the client and/or their parents or guardians concludes the process.
How often are Assessments needed?
Schools may require regular assessment (every two years, or once per phase) to ensure that any concessions or accommodations in place are correct.
Psychologist vs Psychometrist: What’s the Difference?
Psychologists and Psychometrists both work in the field of psychological assessment, but their roles and scope of practice differ.
A Psychologist is a registered mental health professional with advanced training in human behaviour, emotional functioning, and psychological disorders. Psychologists are qualified to diagnose mental health conditions, provide psychotherapy or counselling, and conduct comprehensive psychological assessments. Their training allows them to interpret complex psychological information and support individuals through therapeutic interventions.
A Psychometrist, on the other hand, specialises in the administration and scoring of psychological and psychometric tests. Psychometrists are trained in the scientific measurement of abilities, personality traits, and behavioural patterns. They play an important role in assessment processes by ensuring that tests are administered accurately and ethically.
In many assessment contexts, Psychometrists work alongside Psychologists. The Psychometrist administers the tests, and the Psychologist provides deeper interpretation, diagnosis where applicable, and therapeutic guidance. Both professionals contribute to helping individuals and organisations gain valuable insight through reliable psychological assessment.
How much do Assessments cost?
The prices of assessments are dependent on the type of assessment required. Educational Assessments are time intensive – the process can take up to 10 hours in total – and are therefore more expensive that Career Assessments that are shorter and less complex. Some assessments require extra time or additional services such as school observations. While Psychometry rates are typically lower than those of Educational Psychologists, it is best to request a quote in advance.
Can I claim from Medical Aid?
Some medical aid schemes do provide benefits for Psychological Assessment (Educational). These reimbursement rates may be lower than those charged by the assessor or may not cover all the aspects of the assessment. You may need to make payment upfront and then claim back from your scheme. You should mention this when you confirm an assessment.
